Steve Boehme, a landscape designer, recalls his time as an estate gardener at Jasna Polana in Princeton, New Jersey. Starting at the age of 20, Boehme worked on the grounds crew and was responsible for maintaining various areas of the estate. His attention to detail and dedication to perfection were unmatched, as he meticulously cared for the bocce ball court, hanging gardens, perennial gardens, and miniature roses. He was especially impressed by the network of trails in the woodlands, which were groomed daily and covered with peat moss to create a soft carpet-like surface for the Johnson family to walk silently through the woods.
Boehme was also in awe of the old-world craftsmanship displayed in the estate’s perimeter walls, driveway columns, wrought iron fencing, and stone arched bridge. The attention to detail in every aspect of the estate’s design left a lasting impression on him, sparking his own vision of a “working man’s Jasna Polana” in Ohio.
Now a successful landscape designer himself, Boehme credits his time at Jasna Polana for shaping his design philosophy of using elegant yet inexpensive materials in his projects. His experience at the estate continues to inspire him as he creates beautiful landscapes for his clients.
