South Korea showcased its powerful Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile during an annual military parade, demonstrating its readiness to counter North Korean threats. President Yoon Suk-yeol assured that a nuclear attack from North Korea would be met with a strong military response. The parade also featured 5,300 troops, military equipment, and aircraft flypasts. Yoon has prioritized a strong military alliance with the US and enhanced cooperation with Japan.
The Hyunmoo-5, dubbed a “monster missile” by South Korean media, can carry an 8-tonne warhead capable of penetrating deep into the earth to destroy underground bunkers in North Korea. The missile, part of South Korea’s three-axis defense system, was displayed on two transporter-erector-launcher vehicles. Despite being categorized as short-range, with a 1-tonne warhead, its range can surpass 5,000km.
North Korea’s vice defence minister criticized the B-1B bomber flypast during the parade and accused the US of military bluffing. North Korea has continued to conduct weapon tests and recently showcased its uranium enrichment facility, defying international sanctions. Yoon’s emphasis on military parades and a robust defense strategy aims to deter aggression from North Korea and ensure peace through strength.
