In a recent snap poll conducted after the vice-presidential debate, voters were split evenly at 50-50 on who they felt performed better, Tim Walz from the Democrats or JD Vance from the Republicans, according to Politico. The results reflected the highly polarized political climate in the US as the country heads into a closely contested presidential election.
While Democrats tended to believe that Walz won the debate and Republicans leaned towards Vance, independents saw Walz as the clear winner. Following the debates, a Harris campaign ad criticized Vance for not giving a clear answer when asked if Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden.
The CNN poll also showed that there was no clear winner among registered voters, with both candidates gaining in popularity among viewers. Vance, known for his controversial platform, was seen as more measured and conciliatory during the debate, while Walz maintained his reputation as a “joyful warrior” who exudes reason.
In terms of demographics, Walz was favored more by younger voters, college graduates, and Black and Latino respondents, while Vance performed better with older voters, white voters, and those without a college degree. With the election drawing near, both candidates are now focusing on key battleground states like Pennsylvania in an effort to sway undecided voters and secure their support.
