The Wilmington City Council Finance Committee will be discussing a $10M funding request for The Bridge project, which will house Widener Law School, a nursing school from Del State, and other resources. This project will bring more higher education resources to the city and allow the City of Wilmington to invest in education locally. The investment will also repurpose an underused building and potentially attract young people to live in the city.
Despite the numerous benefits of the project, members of the Working Families Party (WFP) are opposed to it, citing concerns about accountability and prioritizing issues such as water bill assistance and affordable housing. However, the City already has programs in place to address these issues and has made efforts to improve affordable housing by revitalizing vacant properties.
It is important for residents of Wilmington to express their support for The Bridge project to their Councilperson, as it is an opportunity to advance education in the city and should not be hindered by political agendas. The involvement of WFP members, who are not supportive of the project, should be noted in discussions about its funding. The City has made significant progress in addressing affordable housing and other issues, and The Bridge project represents a positive step towards further improving the city’s educational resources and opportunities.
