Father on the run captured on camera with kids in New Zealand wilderness three years following disappearance

A fugitive father, Tom Phillips, and his three children have been spotted together for the first time in nearly three years along the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Phillips fled into the Waikato wilderness with his children Ember, Maverick, and Jayda following a dispute with their mother just before Christmas 2021.

The group was sighted on Marokopa farmland in New Zealand’s Waikato region, wearing camouflage gear and walking through rugged terrain. Police believe this sighting is credible and have initiated patrols and a search in the area to locate them.

Phillips has been missing since November when he allegedly stole a quad bike and broke into a shop in Piopio. He was previously reported missing in September 2021 after claiming to have taken his children on an extended camping trip. Phillips was also charged with wasting police time and resources. The children’s mother expressed relief at seeing them alive and well, while Phillips’ mother hoped for their safe return.

Phillips is wanted for an alleged aggravated robbery in Te Kuiti and an $80,000 reward was offered for information leading to the children’s safe return. Police believe Phillips and the children are being assisted and have urged anyone aiding them to come forward.

The sighting of Phillips and his children has sparked a renewed search effort by authorities, with a focus on ensuring the safe return of Jayda, Maverick, and Ember to their family.
