Migration season is in full swing in Ohio, with millions of birds making their way south. While birding is often overlooked by many, it can also be a way of life for enthusiasts who can easily distinguish between different species of warblers. To celebrate this phenomenon, the Friends of the Library and Preservation Parks of Delaware County are hosting renowned naturalist Kenn Kaufman next week.
Kaufman will be discussing his latest book “The Birds That Audubon Missed” at the Liberty Branch Library on Oct. 17, followed by a morning bird walk at Deer Haven Park on Oct. 18. Tickets for these events support the Friends of the Delaware County District Library, with discounted copies of Kaufman’s book available for purchase. Additionally, BirdCast and the National Audubon Society provide resources to track bird migrations and species throughout their journeys.
For those interested in birding, several books recommended include “What It’s Like to Be A Bird” by David Sibley, “Birds Art Life” by Kyo Maclear, “Better Living Through Birding” by Christian Cooper, “Birder, She Wrote” by Donna Andrews, and “Other Birds” by Sarah Addison Allen. These titles cover a range of bird-related topics, from bird behavior to storytelling around bird watching.
Readers are encouraged to submit their questions about birds to the Delaware County District Library for future columns. The library’s website provides more information on birding events and resources. Embracing the world of birds can offer valuable insights into life, if only we take the time to pay attention.
