The Grazer Triumphs over the Behemoth to Clench the Title, Avenging her Cub’s Death

Grazer, a female bear in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, won the Fat Bear Contest for the second time, defeating Chunk by over 40,000 votes. The contest showcases bears with the most accumulated fat from feeding on salmon in preparation for winter. Grazer’s victory came after her cub was killed by Chunk earlier in the summer. The death was captured on live cameras, as were other bear encounters, including the recent killing of Bear 402.

Grazer, with blond ears and a strong presence on Brooks River, is respected by other bears for her fearlessness and strength. Chunk, a dominant bear with a scar on his muzzle, used his size and confidence to secure prime fishing spots on the river. Adult male brown bears in the area typically weigh over 1,000 pounds after feasting on migrating salmon.

The annual contest, which drew over 1.3 million votes last year, is a way to celebrate the resilience of the 2,200 brown bears in the preserve. Katmai has become a popular tourist destination, with viewing stands built for visitors to watch the bears fish for salmon. The live cameras at explore.org allow fans to follow the competition and witness the daily lives of these iconic Alaskan creatures.
