Galena residents will have the chance to vote on a proposed natural gas aggregation ordinance during the November 5 election. The ordinance would allow the Village of Galena to aggregate retail natural gas loads within the village in order to facilitate the sale and purchase of natural gas for residents. Aspen Energy, a Dublin-based aggregator, has helped over 100 communities save money on energy bills through aggregated buying groups. The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel provides information on governmental energy aggregation, including details on opt-in and opt-out programs. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has certified Galena to pursue aggregation, and if approved by voters, the Village Council will develop a plan for the aggregation after hosting public hearings. Residents will have the opportunity to opt-out of the program if they choose. The OCC offers resources to help residents make informed decisions about energy choices. For more information, residents can visit the Galena village website or contact the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The proposed aggregation has the potential to result in energy cost savings for residents, and voting on the issue will allow residents to have a say in the future of energy services in Galena.
