Former President Donald Trump criticized the U.S. for allowing “big companies” to “raid and rape” the country during an economic address in Detroit. Trump did not specify which companies he was referring to but emphasized the need for businesses to manufacture their products in America and hire American workers. He outlined a plan to provide incentives for foreign companies to open factories in the U.S. by offering low taxes, energy costs, and regulatory burdens.
Trump’s campaign spokesperson mentioned that the administration would impose a tax or tariff on companies that do not manufacture their goods in the U.S. Trump has a history of engaging in a trade war with China and has previously used loaded language to criticize the country’s trade practices. Trump’s own company has produced Trump-branded products in countries like China, Indonesia, Turkey, and Canada.
This speech comes as Trump faces legal battles, including a civil lawsuit from writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of raping her in the 1990s. Trump denied the allegations, and a jury found him not liable for rape but liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. Trump is appealing the verdicts while continuing to promote his economic plan centered around tax breaks for companies manufacturing in the U.S.
