Renowned Palestinian activist criticizes US sanctions as ‘senseless’ | latest updates on Israel-Palestine issue

Europe-based Palestinian activist Majed al-Zeer is speaking out against the United States for imposing sanctions against him. Al-Zeer, who holds British and Jordanian nationality, has rejected the accusations of alleged ties to the Palestinian group Hamas, calling them “absolutely false.” The sanctions were issued by the US Department of the Treasury, claiming that al-Zeer played a central role in Hamas’ European fundraising efforts.

Al-Zeer, the chairman of the European-Palestinian Council for Political Relations, has denied any financial activities during his activism in Europe and criticized the US decision as an attempt to hinder his work for Palestine. He believes the sanctions reflect the US’s alignment with Israel, pointing out that Israel’s response to the Gaza conflict has resulted in numerous Palestinian casualties.

The sanctions froze al-Zeer’s assets in the US and prevent any business transactions with him. The Treasury Department has also targeted other individuals and businesses allegedly supporting Hamas financially. Al-Zeer has vowed to fight against these allegations with the help of legal representation.

This is not the first time al-Zeer has faced accusations of ties to Hamas, as in 2019 he successfully challenged being categorized as linked to “terrorism” by a customer-screening database. He has also questioned the evidence provided by the US Treasury Department, which includes a photograph of him with a Hamas leader. Al-Zeer dismissed the evidence as “almost laughable” and asserts that he will defend his rights against these baseless allegations.
