In response to increased security concerns and staffing issues within the U.S. Secret Service, both presidential campaigns have reduced the frequency and types of events they are holding on the trail. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump’s campaigns have pulled back on off-the-record stops due to new security requirements following a recent assassination attempt on Trump in July. Planning these local stops has become more labor-intensive and restricted, diminishing the element of surprise that creates local buzz about the candidates. Additionally, small business owners are expressing reservations about hosting campaign events due to safety concerns. The Secret Service has increased protection for both candidates, including erecting bullet-proof glass and reducing outdoor events. This has resulted in changes to the optics of the events and limited strong visual moments aimed for TV and social media coverage. Despite the security challenges, both campaigns have not completely abandoned these local stops. For example, JD Vance purchased a Trump chew toy at a local feed and agriculture center, while Kamala Harris made a stop at a cafe in Detroit to engage with voters. These events, though constrained by security measures, continue to be an important part of engaging with communities during the final stretch of the race.
