Man convicted for murdering four family member and pregnant woman during dispute over late curfew as a teenager

Raymond Childs III of Indianapolis was found guilty of six counts of murder, including the death of five people, one of whom was a pregnant woman on the verge of giving birth. The killings occurred in January 2021, following an argument over the 17-year-old Childs staying out late. Childs proceeded to shoot his father, stepmother, stepsister, stepbrother, his brother’s girlfriend, and her unborn child. Childs’ younger brother was also shot but managed to escape. The jury deliberated for three hours before delivering the guilty verdict after a five-day trial. This came after a mistrial was declared in his first trial due to a witness confrontation. Childs was additionally convicted of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license. Prosecutors described the killings as “unfathomable” and stated the verdict brought justice to the victims. Childs faces 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for the handgun charge. The sentencing is scheduled for January 7. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office commended the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses for their dedication to seeking justice for the victims. Childs’ attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
