Producer Jonathan Saba has acquired the film rights to Sean Patrick Griffin’s novel, “Gaming the Game,” which exposes the NBA betting scandal involving former Cardinal O’Hara students James Battista and Tim Donaghy. Battista, known as Jimmy “The Sheep,” became a successful bookmaker and teamed up with Donaghy, an NBA referee, to manipulate the point spread of basketball games. Together, they formed a betting syndicate called The Animals, which rocked the professional sports world when it was revealed that a referee was betting on his own games. Saba described The Animals as unassuming yet sophisticated, crude yet shrewd, and hardworking yet uninterested in material success. The film will explore the intricate world of sports betting through Battista’s eyes and promises to unveil a deeper story beyond what is already known.
