Sports tourism in Delaware is booming, with a new study commissioned by the Delaware Tourism Office revealing impressive figures. The study, conducted by Tourism Economics, highlighted $258 million in economic impact and 1.1 million sports enthusiasts coming to the state. This marks a significant contribution to the local economy, with over 3,000 jobs created and $20.2 million in state and local taxes generated in 2023 alone.
The study focused on various aspects of sports tourism, including spending patterns and job creation in the sports industry. Director of the Delaware Tourism Office, Jessica Welch, expressed her excitement about the industry’s growth and revealed two new programs aimed at further boosting sports tourism in the state. The Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund has already awarded $11.3 million to support facilities, with an additional $10 million set to be awarded soon. Additionally, the Tournaments, Events and Athletic Meets Sponsorship Program has provided over $350,000 in grants to attract new events to Delaware.
The results of the study were announced at the BPG Sports’ Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington, a popular sports complex that has seen tremendous success in the past year. Rob Buccini, co-founder of the Buccini/Pollin Group, which manages BPG Sports, emphasized the impact of sports tourism on the local economy. He highlighted the facility’s accessibility and its ability to attract both destination travelers and local athletes.
Deputy Secretary of State Kristopher Knight emphasized the importance of the study in showcasing the economic impact of sports tourism in Delaware. He noted the need for infrastructure growth to support the industry’s evolution and ensure its continued success in the state. With the support of programs like the Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund and the TEAMS Program, Delaware’s sports tourism industry is well-positioned for future growth and development.
