An Orange County Sheriff’s Department employee, Roxana C. Laub, has recently pleaded guilty to charges of forging checks and fraudulently using credit cards in her grandmother’s name. Laub, 33, faces up to 30 years in federal prison for bank fraud and up to 15 years for identity theft. Over a period of five years, Laub allegedly stole more than $45,000 from her grandmother by forging checks and using her credit cards for personal expenses such as meals at restaurants and bars.
During this time, Laub attempted to pose as her grandmother on the phone with the bank to extract personal information about her account. She also made thousands of dollars in payments for her credit card charges using her grandmother’s bank account without her knowledge. Laub has expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging that what she did was unforgivable. She has agreed to repay all the money she stole from her grandmother.
The crimes were investigated by the FBI and the FDIC Office of the Inspector General, with assistance from the Long Beach Police Department. The National Elder Fraud Hotline is available for financial fraud victims aged 60 and over. Laub’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 9, 2025. The case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of protecting elderly family members from financial exploitation.
