AAA Reports Expected Travel Surge: Over 200,000 Delaware Residents on the Move this Thanksgiving Weekend

Record Travel Anticipated in Delaware for Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

DELAWARE – An impressive rise in travel is on the horizon this Thanksgiving, as AAA projects that nearly 217,000 residents of Delaware will hit the road or take to the skies during the holiday weekend—a 2 percent increase compared to last year and marking a new record for the state. This surge in travel is indicative of a broader trend, as this year’s volume exceeds pre-pandemic levels, showcasing a renewed eagerness for family reunions and holiday gatherings.

According to Jana Tidwell, Manager of Public and Government Affairs at AAA Mid-Atlantic, the changing landscape of work, including the prevalence of remote jobs and extended school breaks, has contributed to the increased travel demand. "We’re expecting to set new records across the board, from driving to flying and cruising," Tidwell noted.

The majority of Delaware travelers, approximately 198,000 or 91 percent, are projected to drive to their destinations, reflecting a 1.8 percent increase from last year. Air travel is also on the rise, with over 13,000 individuals choosing to fly—a 1.6 percent uptick. Furthermore, alternative transportation methods, including trains, buses, and cruises, are expected to see a 6 percent increase, with more than 4,100 travelers opting for these options.

For the first time, this year’s travel forecast encompasses a six-day period from the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to the Monday after, aiming to capture shifting travel patterns. On a national scale, AAA estimates that nearly 80 million Americans will travel during the holiday, showing a similar growth trend of 2.1 percent from the previous year. As the holiday approaches, Delawareans are poised to join millions across the country in celebrating Thanksgiving together.
