DSU Receives Seven-Year Grant from the National Institutes of Health

Delaware State University Secures $7 Million NIH Grant for New Research Center

Dover, DE – Delaware State University (DSU) has been awarded a significant $7 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This seven-year funding will facilitate the establishment of the new interdisciplinary DSU Center for Research and Education in Multiscale Bioengineering, Bioimaging and Biosensing, which will be housed in the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology.

Dean Cherese Winstead highlighted the transformative potential of this grant, particularly for first-generation undergraduate students. “Research is really where it’s at,” Winstead stated. She emphasized the importance of providing students with early exposure to research opportunities, corporate internships, and experience in translating research into commercial products. This experience is crucial as many students lack access to insights on how fundamental research can lead to successful technology commercialization.

Winstead pointed out that Delaware State University is one of only two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to receive such a substantial grant from the NIH, alongside North Carolina A&T. The grant is expected to enhance recruitment efforts for bioengineering and biomedical engineering students at DSU. She noted, “We are on track to get an ABET accredited program, having applied for our readiness review,” highlighting the initiative’s goal to establish a formal engineering program.

In addition, DSU President Tony Allen announced the creation of the Agilent Technology Research Center, a new building that will further bolster the university’s research capabilities in the life sciences. This grant represents a significant step forward for DSU as it aims to strengthen its impact in bioengineering education and research.
