Leadership Appointed for Delaware House

Delaware House Democrats Make History with New Leadership

In a notable shift following the recent election, the Delaware House of Representatives has seen an expansion within its Democratic caucus, which now includes 27 members, just one seat shy of a supermajority. The caucus recently appointed Rep. Melissa Minor-Brown, D-New Castle, as speaker-elect, marking her as the first Black woman to hold the position. She succeeds Valerie Longhurst, who was ousted in the primary.

“I’m honored that our caucus put their trust in me to serve as the first Black female speaker,” Minor-Brown expressed. “This moment reflects the growing diversity within our Legislature and our state.”

The official confirmation of Minor-Brown as speaker will occur on January 14, 2025, coinciding with the swearing-in of all state representatives. The caucus also elected Rep. Kerri Evelyn Harris, D-Dover, as House majority leader, making her the first member of the LGBTQ+ community in this leadership role.

“With Donald Trump returning to the presidency, our work as a caucus is more urgent than ever. I’m ready to hit the ground running,” Minor-Brown stated, emphasizing the commitment to protect vulnerable populations and uphold community rights.

The Democratic caucus welcomed six new members, elevating the total number of women to a record 17 out of 27. Meanwhile, the Republican caucus has initiated changes in leadership, appointing Rep. Tim Dukes as House minority leader and Rep. Jeff Spiegelman as minority whip.

As the new legislative session approaches, both parties are preparing to tackle ongoing challenges while prioritizing the needs of Delawareans amidst a changing political landscape.
