Senator Kyle Evans Gay has been elected Lt. Governor and Senator Sarah McBride will become the state’s next Congresswoman, leaving their state senate seats vacant. However, their resignation dates have not been coordinated, causing uncertainty regarding the timing of special elections to replace them. The process for holding special elections involves issuing a Writ of Election within 10 days of the vacancy, but Governor Carney may have to resign early to take office as Wilmington Mayor, potentially leaving Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long to issue the writ. If both senators resign on January 2nd, the Special Election could take place between February 2nd and 7th. The candidates in the 1st Senate District include Adriana Leela Bohm, Dan Cruce, George Frankel, Chris Otto, Melissa Froemming, David Vagnoni, Chantae Vinson, and Kenneth Woods. In the 5th Senate District, the candidates are Sharikka Shay Frisby, Dr. Bryan Haimes, Ray Siegfried, and Jonathan Tate. The nominees will likely be chosen by the members of the respective Representative District Committees. Although Governor-Elect Matt Meyer suggested holding primaries, it is too late for this election cycle. A new law will need to be passed by the General Assembly to establish primaries for future special elections.
