Delaware State Senator Bryan Townsend recently discussed the recommendations made by the Student Behavior and School Climate Task Force in a conversation with DPM’s Sarah Petrowich. The task force, which has been meeting since April, focused on addressing student behavioral issues in Delaware classrooms by listening to educators, teachers, and stakeholders. The final report includes nine categories for state leaders to consider, such as data-driven practices, behavioral interventions, and parent and community engagement.
Townsend highlighted the importance of implementing or strengthening in-school programs that effectively address behavioral needs, such as Social Emotional Learning programs and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. He also emphasized the need for more play-based learning and curriculum for young learners, stating that the focus on testing may have overshadowed these effective teaching methods.
Looking ahead, Townsend plans to reconvene the task force in the upcoming legislative session to explore curriculum-based changes that support early childhood learners. He also aims to identify legislative changes that can be made without a fiscal note as a starting point. The discussions and recommendations made by the task force provide a roadmap for addressing student behavior issues in Delaware classrooms and promoting a positive school climate for all students.
