The rising food prices since the start of the pandemic in 2020 have made the holiday season even more expensive for individuals. Although the rate of food price inflation has been declining, prices in September 2023 were still 1.3% higher than in September 2020. This has led to an increase in the number of families seeking assistance from organizations like the Food Bank of the Rockies on the Western Slope.
Due to the financial strains, one in eight residents on the Western Slope are facing food insecurity and are unable to afford a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The Food Bank of the Rockies stepped in to provide Thanksgiving goodies to over 200 families through their mobile pantry in Delta’s Confluence Park.
Clients of the mobile pantry expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that they would not have been able to afford a Thanksgiving meal without this support. The pantry distributed not only Thanksgiving-themed items but also essential food items like ground beef, chicken, and fresh produce. The volunteers at the pantry emphasized the importance of such programs in helping those who may not qualify for traditional food assistance programs but still struggle to afford food.
The Food Bank of the Rockies is looking for increased funding and support to be able to meet the ongoing need for food assistance on the Western Slope. Donations can be made through their website, and volunteer support is also crucial in distributing food to those in need. The organization aims to continue providing essential food items to the community and help alleviate food insecurity during the holiday season and beyond.
