13 bodies recovered from capsized tourist boat off Egypt’s Red Sea coast, search continues for missing individuals

Three bodies were recovered while 13 people remained missing after a tourist boat capsized off Egypt’s Red Sea coast. The boat, named Sea Story, was carrying 31 tourists and 13 crew members on a diving trip when it was struck by high waves and sank in just 5-7 minutes near the Sataya Reef. Despite the efforts of rescue teams, 16 passengers were believed to be trapped inside the vessel.

Twenty-eight survivors were rescued with minor injuries and were being accommodated in a hotel in Marsa Alam with assistance from authorities and embassies. The boat had recently passed a safety inspection in March 2024 and had a one-year safety certificate from the Maritime Safety Authority. The incident occurred during rough weather conditions, with wave heights of 10-13 feet and wind speeds of 34 knots.

This is the second boat to sink in the area this year, highlighting the dangerous conditions in the Red Sea. The region is famous for its coral reefs and marine life, making it a popular destination for tourists. Egypt’s tourism industry is a crucial part of the country’s economy, and incidents like this can have a significant impact on the sector. Authorities are continuing their search for the missing individuals while investigating the cause of the boat’s sinking.
