The European Parliament has approved Ursula von der Leyen’s team for her second term as European Commission president, which includes new commissioners responsible for culture, technology, and the Creative Europe Media programme. Finland’s Henna Virkkunen will serve as the executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy, overseeing areas such as AI, copyright, and media regulation. Malta’s Glenn Micallef is the commissioner for intergenerational fairness, youth, culture, and sport, with a focus on improving working conditions for artists and developing an AI strategy for the cultural and creative industries. The team of 26 commissioners, along with von der Leyen, will begin a five-year term from December 1st. Each candidate underwent a suitability assessment by the European Parliament, involving written questions and appearances before key committees. The confirmation of the commissioner team comes after a months-long process that began with June’s European election. This new team of commissioners represents a diverse range of expertise and responsibilities that aim to drive forward key initiatives in areas such as technology, culture, and the creative industries within the European Union.
