Georgetown residents have narrowly passed a referendum to fund a new police station and public works facility. The vote saw 183 in favor and 170 against, with the town authorized to borrow up to $18 million for the project. The new police station is estimated to cost $8 to 12 million while the public works facility will cost $4 to 6 million. Georgetown’s police chief, Ralph Holm, emphasized the need for the new facilities due to the town’s growth and the department’s current lack of space. The department is approved to have 25 officers but currently only has 19. The new location for the facilities will be across the street from Delaware Tech, about a mile away from the current building. Holm expressed gratitude for the community’s support and assured those who voted against the project that the new location will not negatively impact the quality of service provided. He anticipates that the new facility will be operational within the next two years. The decision to move forward with the project was made after the mayor and Town Council voted in August to proceed with the plans, highlighting the importance of addressing the town’s growing needs in terms of law enforcement and public works.
