Trump appoints former General Keith Kellogg as special envoy for Russia and Ukraine.

President-elect Donald Trump has announced that he will nominate retired Gen. Keith Kellogg to serve as assistant to the president and special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg previously served as Chief of Staff and executive secretary to the National Security Council during Trump’s first administration and has authored a policy paper outlining his approach to ending the war in Ukraine. The paper suggests conditioning U.S. military aid to Ukraine on their participation in peace talks with Russia, as well as seeking a ceasefire and negotiated settlement of the conflict.

Trump has promised to work with both parties to end the war in Ukraine and expressed dissatisfaction with U.S. aid to the country. His complicated relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was highlighted by his first impeachment, where he was accused of withholding aid to pressure Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden. Vice president-elect JD Vance and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick for Health and Human Services, have also criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine.

Vance has supported peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and NATO allies, emphasizing the need to engage in negotiation to end the war. He has previously questioned the necessity of U.S. aid to Ukraine, stating that Europe’s economies should be able to support the country. Kennedy has also voiced similar sentiments, suggesting that the U.S. should focus on bringing aid back to benefit American interests.
