Thanksgiving holiday travel has been impacted by a storm tracking from the Rockies to the Midwest and Northeast, causing delays in flights and creating slick roads across the country. Nearly 3 million people were expected to be screened by the TSA on Wednesday and a record 71.7 million were expected to travel by car, leading to packed roads and busy airports. Flights have been delayed or cancelled in cities such as Denver, Newark, and Tampa due to snow, ice, and fog. Road travel has also been affected by rain and snow, with I-80, I-64, and I-75 impacted by rain and I-25 and I-70 impacted by snow in the Rockies. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is expected to happen despite rainy conditions in New York City, and road conditions will remain slick as far south as Virginia and Maryland. Travel is expected to return to normal overnight into Friday, although cold winds and lake effect snow will continue in New England and the Great Lakes region through Sunday. Authorities are warning travelers to be cautious about leaving their cars in airport parking lots, as vehicle thefts have been on the rise this year, with over 300 cars stolen from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport alone. Police are taking steps to increase security at airports in response to these crimes.
