Recent advancements in AI visual analysis have revolutionized waste sorting processes, making it more efficient and accurate. This technology allows for the identification and separation of different materials based on their visual characteristics, similar to how a human would recognize them on a shelf. By using AI systems, waste facilities can increase the number of items correctly picked and the value of recovered materials.

In addition to visual AI, the emerging technology of digital watermarking is being explored as a way to identify the exact plastic resin in packaging materials. This invisible code could provide valuable information when scanned, similar to how QR codes work. However, widespread adoption of this technology is necessary for it to be effective.

One example of a state-of-the-art waste sorting facility is Site Zero in Sweden, which processes around 200,000 tons of plastic waste annually. Using a combination of lasers, cameras, and sensors, the facility ensures that 95 percent of the waste is recyclable material. Cleaning waste streams and turning materials back into useful products is crucial for achieving a circular economy where materials are continually reused.

Researchers have also discovered natural organisms, such as bacteria and fungi, that can break down difficult-to-recycle materials, including plastic bottles and toxic chemicals like PFAS. These organisms produce enzymes that break down the materials into precursor chemicals that can be remade into new products. By harnessing the power of bioremediation, we can potentially solve some of the biggest challenges in waste management and recycling.
