Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester has been projected to become the first Black woman to represent Delaware in the Senate after defeating Republican Eric Hansen and independent candidate Mike Katz. Throughout her campaign, Blunt Rochester focused on creating jobs, protecting reproductive rights, health care, and addressing the needs of seniors and families. Despite being a history-making candidate as the first woman and Black person to represent the state in Congress, she emphasized that her goal was to make a difference rather than simply break barriers.
Hansen, a former executive, highlighted his business experience as an advantage over career politicians, while Katz, a physician and former state senator, ran as an independent after previously being a Democrat. Blunt Rochester made it clear that she did not take her lead in the polls for granted and aimed to represent all Delaware residents, regardless of political affiliation.
If elected, Blunt Rochester will join Laphonza Butler of California as the only Black women currently serving in the Senate. During her election night speech, she acknowledged the trailblazing efforts of the Black women who came before her in the Senate, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun. The race in Delaware was closely watched due to the historical underrepresentation of Black women in the Senate, making Blunt Rochester’s potential victory significant.
Blunt Rochester’s political career was inspired by personal tragedy when her second husband passed away suddenly in 2014. Since then, she has become a champion for working families, women, and civil rights. Organizations like EMILY’s List have praised her as a groundbreaking leader and expressed support for her historic candidacy.
