Delaware state senator Sarah McBride has made history by becoming the first openly transgender lawmaker projected to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. McBride easily defeated Republican John Whalen III in the race for Delaware’s lone House seat. She thanked the voters of Delaware for their support in a post on social media, emphasizing the need for a country that protects reproductive freedom, guarantees paid leave and affordable childcare, and ensures housing and healthcare for all.
McBride, who has raised over $3 million in campaign contributions, is known for her activism in the LGBTQ community and her opposition to legislative bans on transgender people in sports. She gained national recognition in 2016 as the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention. In 2020, she became the first transgender state senator in the U.S.
The 33-year-old activist-turned-politician believes that Congress needs more diverse representation. With a strong progressive platform, McBride aims to advocate for inclusive policies that benefit all Americans. Her victory marks a significant milestone in LGBTQ representation in politics.
