Rep. Lori Trahan and her family were targeted by a bomb threat, which was reported via email to the Westford Police Department. The police quickly responded to the threat, searched Trahan’s home, and found no device, determining that there was no immediate threat to public safety. The threat appears to be part of a series of unfounded threats against political figures across the country.
This incident comes after several members of Congress and President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks were also targeted with bomb threats and swatting incidents. Last week, at least seven Democratic lawmakers from New England, including another Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Seth Moulton, were notified of bomb threats targeting their homes before Thanksgiving, though no bombs were found.
The U.S. Capitol Police, responsible for protecting members of Congress, reported an increase in threats against lawmakers, with over 8,000 cases investigated in one year. The final statistics for 2024 have not been released. Rep. Trahan emphasized that threats of violence and intimidation have no place in the country, and local police are working with federal authorities to investigate the incident. The Capitol Police have not yet commented on the threat.
