Election Day in Delaware: What You Can Expect

The upcoming Nov. 5 general election in Delaware will see voters selecting replacements for top elected officials, including the President, Governor, and U.S. Senator. Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, Republican former President Donald Trump, and third-party candidates will compete for the state’s three electoral votes to replace Democratic President Joe Biden. Additionally, Governor John Carney and U.S. Senator Tom Carper, both Democrats, are not seeking reelection after holding elected positions in Delaware for over 70 years combined.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester is running to replace Carper, potentially becoming the third Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate. State Sen. Sarah McBride is running to replace Blunt Rochester and could become Delaware’s first transgender federal elected official.

Delaware, once a reliable presidential bellwether, has not voted for a Republican in the last eight elections. The AP does not make projections but will declare a winner only when trailing candidates cannot close the gap. The Nov. 5 election will also feature key races for U.S. House, state Senate, state House, lieutenant governor, insurance commissioner, and Wilmington mayor.

Registered voters in Delaware number 786,577, with about 45% Democrats, 26% Republicans, and 23% no party. Voter turnout in the 2020 presidential election was 68%, with a significant portion of votes cast before Election Day. Vote-counting typically concludes by midnight on Election Day. The AP’s Explaining Election 2024 series aims to provide clarity on U.S. elections.
