The Delaware Office of Highway Safety is urging residents to prioritize safe driving for seniors through their Drive Safe Seniors initiative, which will run until 2025. The initiative aims to encourage drivers aged 65 and older, along with their families, to work together to prevent accidents. The OHS website will offer tips on how to approach older drivers and address common issues surrounding their driving abilities. Meghan Niddrie, a community relations officer at OHS, highlighted signs to watch for in aging drivers, such as vehicle damage, traffic violations, and changes in behavior while driving. Age-related health changes can impact driving skills, including decreased vision, slower reaction times, and diminished cognitive abilities. Niddrie advised having conversations early with older drivers about driving limitations and exploring alternatives like Uber, Lyft, and DART. By planning ahead and addressing potential concerns, families can help ensure the safety of senior drivers on the road.
