Understanding Black Hawk Helicopters and Their Uses: Insights after D.C. Plane Crash

The UH-60 Black Hawk is a utility tactical transport helicopter that has been in operation with the U.S. Army since 1979. Known for its reliability and survivability in combat and transport missions, the Black Hawk is considered the “workhorse” of Army aviation. Manufactured by Sikorsky, the Black Hawk has been used by 36 countries and is expected to remain a key part of the Army’s fleet for the next three decades.

The Black Hawk involved in the collision with American Eagle Flight 5342 was on a training mission with an experienced crew from Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The collision, which took the lives of all 67 people aboard both aircraft, is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The cause of the collision remains unclear, but the lack of crew chiefs on the training mission to scan the skies for potential dangers has raised concerns. In the past decade, there have been 60 deaths in training incidents involving Black Hawk helicopters. However, the Black Hawk has been found to have fewer deadly incidents relative to flight hours compared to other helicopters in the Army’s fleet, such as the AH-64 Apache and CH-47 Chinook.

This incident, along with previous fatal collisions involving Army helicopters, has prompted the Army to take measures to prevent future accidents, including grounding all aviation except for critical missions when necessary.
