Eaton and Palisades fires fully contained after 24 days of destruction

The Palisades and Eaton fires in Southern California, which started in early January, were declared fully contained by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection after burning for 3½ weeks. The Palisades Fire started in Pacific Palisades and quickly spread due to dry weather conditions, while the Eaton Fire erupted in Los Angeles County and destroyed many structures in Altadena. In total, at least 29 people were killed in the fires. The official cause of the fires is still under investigation.

The Palisades Fire covered 23,448 acres and destroyed thousands of structures, while the Eaton Fire destroyed even more structures, including historic homes in Altadena. The fires were fueled by drought-like conditions and strong offshore winds, creating extremely dangerous fire weather conditions in Southern California. The National Weather Service issued warnings and Gov. Gavin Newsom mobilized state resources in preparation for the fires.

Despite overwhelming efforts to contain the fires, some were successful, such as the Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills. Recent rainfall in Southern California helped firefighters control the blazes. Cal Fire Chief Joe Tyler credited the rain showers with reducing the fire potential in the region. Overall, the recent wildfires were devastating, but containment efforts and natural factors helped bring them under control.
