Federal Judge Postpones Hunter Biden’s Tax Fraud Trial Until September
A federal judge in Los Angeles has agreed to delay Hunter Biden’s federal criminal trial on tax fraud charges until September. Originally scheduled for June 20, Biden’s legal team requested the postponement citing scheduling conflicts and pending appeals related to his three felony gun charges trial in Delaware set for June 3. Biden has pleaded not guilty to all charges and his attorneys argued during a hearing on Wednesday that challenges securing expert witnesses warranted a delay.
Special counsel David Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump and named by Attorney General Merrick Garland, has alleged that Biden engaged in a four-year scheme to avoid paying over $1.4 million in federal taxes. The Justice Department stated that Biden failed to pay taxes on more than $7 million in gross income, funding an extravagant lifestyle by dodging taxes through business deductions on personal expenses such as luxury hotel stays, vehicle rentals, and escort services.
The federal judge’s decision comes as the president’s son is also facing felony gun charges in Delaware. Weiss plans to call numerous witnesses in the gun case, including Hunter Biden’s ex-wife and former girlfriends. Prosecutors also revealed they will try to present evidence from Hunter Biden’s iCloud account and laptop during the upcoming trial.
The trials against Hunter Biden are proceeding after a plea agreement on tax charges and a diversion agreement related to the firearms charge fell apart in July 2023. Despite Hunter Biden’s legal team arguing that the agreements were still in effect, judges have not dismissed the charges. Giuliani’s involvement in providing evidence from Hunter Biden’s laptop, which was allegedly hacked, has added complexity to the case.
