Several individuals trapped in Trump’s immigration crackdown have been released in the United States.

The Trump administration has made a strong public push to arrest and deport immigrants since taking office, with over 8,000 arrests being publicized. However, some of those arrested have been released back into the United States on a monitoring program due to space constraints in detention facilities and court orders limiting indefinite detention. ICE does not disclose how many arrested individuals are released, kept in detention, or deported. Those released are monitored through programs like Alternatives to Detention, using ankle monitors or telephonic check-ins. Trump had vowed to end “catch and release” policies for migrants at the southern border, but due to capacity issues ICE is still releasing some detained in the interior. ICE prioritizes detaining immigrants considered public safety threats and uses discretion when deciding whether to release those with no serious criminal convictions. The administration considers factors like countries refusing to take back their citizens and medical needs or caregiving responsibilities of detainees when deciding who to release. On Saturday, Trump announced that Venezuela had agreed to take back their nationals living in the United States.
