Conservative author Darren Beattie, known for promoting conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and expressing controversial views on social media, has been appointed as acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Beattie confirmed the appointment on his website and stated that he will be suspending his involvement with his website, Revolver News, to focus on his new role.
Beattie has a history of making inflammatory remarks, including statements about the need for competent white men to be in charge and promoting the theory that the FBI was involved in the Capitol attack. Former President Trump has endorsed Beattie’s work and praised his reporting challenging the official narrative of the events on Jan. 6.
Despite being fired from the Trump White House in 2018 for his connections to white nationalists, Beattie was later hired by Rep. Matt Gaetz and appointed to a three-year term with the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad by the Trump administration. The Biden administration later requested his resignation from the unpaid post.
Beattie’s appointment has been met with criticism, with the Anti-Defamation League calling it “outrageous.” The State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Beattie’s new role.
