Man from Georgia handed nearly 500-year sentence for involvement in dog fights and animal abuse

Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals, involving 107 dogs seized from his property in 2022. Burrell denied involvement in dog fighting in court, and it is unclear if he will appeal the sentence. The case began when an Amazon delivery worker reported dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property, leading to a search and arrest. Prosecutors found evidence of dog fighting on the property, including a treadmill designed for dogs and a breeding stand. Many of the dogs showed signs of abuse and neglect, with some found living in a basement with urine and feces on the ground. The dogs were seized under a federal warrant and taken in by a nonprofit organization. Among the rescued dogs was Baby Shark, intended for fighting according to prosecutors. Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced Burrell based on his conviction on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals, which resulted in the longest-known sentence for dog fighting. Rock, a state animal crimes resource prosecutor, noted that the judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed by law.
