University of Delaware student charged with hate crime after allegedly vandalizing Holocaust memorial

A University of Delaware student, Jenna Kandeel, is facing hate crime charges after vandalizing a Holocaust memorial display on campus. Kandeel, 23, damaged flags in the memorial and made vulgar statements about the Jewish community. She has been charged with a hate crime, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. University Police arrested Kandeel after witnesses reported the incident. University President Dennis Assanis stated that such incidents have no place on campus, and Kandeel has been banned from campus. The State Attorney General, Kathy Jennings, emphasized the need to address antisemitism in society. This incident follows a series of vandalism targeting Jewish displays on campus since April. The Jewish campus group UD Hillel expressed sadness about the April incidents but commended the quick response from the university and police. In response to the vandalism, a new display with pro-Palestinian flags was set up on campus. The university is working to address the issue, although no arrests were made in the April incidents. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of combating hate and discrimination in the community.
