NASA’s Cutting-Edge Drone Technology to Combat Wildfires – DRONELIFE


NASA is collaborating with the wildfire response community to develop new technologies to enhance aerial firefighting operations, particularly at night. The goal is to enable drones to assist in wildfire suppression 24/7, even in low-visibility conditions. To address the challenge of operating safely at night, NASA has been testing airspace management technologies that allow drones and remotely piloted aircraft to operate effectively.
One of the developments from this collaboration is the Portable Airspace Management System (PAMS), which helps drone pilots safely deploy aircraft for wildfire response. Each PAMS unit is equipped with components like a computer for airspace management, a radio for communication, and an ADS-B receiver to track air traffic. The system is easily deployable in the field and helps prevent airborne collisions by monitoring flight plans and sharing information with other aircraft.
Testing of PAMS at various locations across the country has shown promising results. Researchers successfully demonstrated the system’s ability to detect conflicts, alert pilots, and share real-time aircraft and weather information during simulated firefighting scenarios. These advancements aim to improve aerial coordination during wildfires, reduce the impacts of large wildfires, and ultimately save lives.
NASA’s ACERO project, which operates within the agency’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, supports these efforts to enhance aerial firefighting operations. Further flight evaluations are planned to refine wildfire technologies, with the ultimate goal of transferring the technology to firefighting agencies to improve their operational capabilities. This initiative is part of NASA’s broader efforts in the Advanced Air Mobility mission.
