National Women’s Soccer League reaches $5 million settlement for historical mistreatment of players

The National Women’s Soccer League has reached a $5 million settlement with three attorneys general over past mistreatment of its athletes. The settlement follows years of allegations of sexual misconduct and emotional abuse among coaches and officials, dating back over a decade. The league failed to take reasonable measures to protect its players, leading to investigations and the settlement. As part of the agreement, a $5 million fund will be created for players who experienced abuse to collect compensation, and individual players can still pursue private legal action. The NWSL has implemented reforms, including increased coach vetting, mental health support, and training programs to prevent bullying and harassment. The league will provide reports to the attorneys general detailing any complaints of misconduct for the next three years, and players will be surveyed annually regarding their coaches and team culture. Failure to comply with the terms of the agreement could result in an additional penalty of $2 million. Since NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman took over in 2022, the league has made strides in improving player contracts through a collective bargaining agreement and issuing lifetime bans against coaches involved in past misconduct. The league has also expanded, with Denver being awarded the 16th franchise at a record $110 million expansion fee.
