The University of Delaware and Delaware State University are seeking multi-million dollar budget increases that were left out of the former governor’s spending proposal. UD President Dennis Assanis is requesting an additional $8 million to support scholarship funding, expand programs, and bolster colleges. Specifically, $4.5 million would go towards the First State Promise scholarship program, $1.7 million for the associate to bachelor’s program, $1.325 million for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and $615,000 for the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. DSU is also seeking a $10 million increase to its base budget to support its growth and programs. Both universities are hoping for more equitable funding from the state to better support their students and programs. The General Assembly will have the final say on which requests are ultimately funded. Governor Matt Meyer is expected to release his recommended budget next month.
