A federal judge has blocked political appointees and special government employees, including those from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), from accessing sensitive information in the Treasury Department. This decision follows a lawsuit by 19 state attorneys general alleging that Elon Musk and DOGE employees had no authority to access Treasury data containing Americans’ private information. The judge issued a restraining order preventing access to payment records and other data with personally identifiable and confidential financial information. The order also requires those who had access to such data to destroy any copies they have. A hearing is set for Feb. 14 to consider a preliminary injunction. The White House and Department of Justice have not commented on the situation. In a similar case, union members and retirees sued the government for violating privacy laws by allowing DOGE employees access to Treasury data. The Trump administration agreed to limit access to only two DOGE employees after this lawsuit. One of these employees, Marko Elez, resigned after being linked to a social media account promoting racist views. Musk defended Elez and promised to reinstate him at DOGE.
