Former NFL Wide Receiver DeSean Jackson Named Delaware State’s New Head Coach

Former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson has been announced as the new head coach of Delaware State University’s football team, joining a trend of HBCU teams hiring former professional players. Jackson, 38, last played in the NFL in 2022 and brings extensive experience to the role. His hire comes shortly after Norfolk State hired Michael Vick as their head coach.

Delaware State had a challenging season in 2024, finishing with a 1-11 record and suffering several losses by double digits. With only one win, the program is looking to turn things around under Jackson’s leadership. In a statement, Jackson expressed his excitement to contribute to the school’s athletic program and bring a new level of talent and success to the team.

With 15 seasons in the NFL and stints with six different teams, Jackson is known for his deep-threat abilities and three Pro Bowl appearances. His best season came in 2013 when he recorded 1,332 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. After retiring from professional play, Jackson served as an assistant coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in California.

Both Jackson and Vick, former teammates with the Eagles, will face each other in the upcoming season as Delaware State and Norfolk State compete in the MEAC conference. The rivalry between the two former NFL stars adds an exciting dynamic to the upcoming matchups. Delaware State hopes that Jackson’s leadership will lead to a successful season and a positive trajectory for the football program.
