Truly an ‘aha’ moment with a light bulb

Illac Diaz, founder of Liter of Light, has revolutionized the way people access affordable lighting. By using recycled materials like plastic bottles filled with water and bleach, the organization has provided lighting solutions to over 690,000 people worldwide, with 382,000 of them being Filipinos.

Diaz’s journey started with the establishment of Pier One, which provided housing for sailors, and eventually led to the creation of the Myshelter Foundation, which now runs Liter of Light. The project not only brings light to homes but also creates opportunities for entrepreneurship, particularly for women who can build and sell the lamps in their communities.

By utilizing solar power and small solar panels, Liter of Light’s systems allow for sustainable and cost-effective lighting solutions. One bottle light can illuminate a home with the equivalent of a 55-watt bulb, providing extra hours of activity after sunset and enabling activities like entrepreneurship and education.

The impact of Liter of Light extends beyond just providing light. The organization also helps communities finance the systems through micro-credit programs and partnerships with private donors, companies, and public institutions. With the installation of household lamps and streetlights in villages like Rizal, Liter of Light is not only brightening homes but also creating a pathway to economic empowerment and sustainability.
