Record low marriage rates in China last year raise concerns about declining birth rates

Marriages in China dropped by a record 20% last year, with more than 6.1 million couples registering for marriage compared to 7.68 million the previous year. This decline has been attributed to the high cost of child care and education, as well as economic uncertainty and difficulty finding stable employment. The trend of declining marriages in China poses a challenge for the government’s efforts to address its aging population, with roughly 300 million people expected to retire in the coming decade. To combat this issue, authorities in China have implemented measures to encourage marriage and childbearing, such as promoting “love education” in universities and emphasizing positive views on marriage and family. Despite a slight increase in births last year, the country’s population continued to decline for the third consecutive year. Additionally, the number of divorces in China increased by 1.1% last year, with over 2.6 million couples filing for divorce. These trends highlight the challenges China faces in addressing its demographic challenges and ensuring a sustainable population growth in the future.
