Despite being essential to the region’s economy, many Haitian and Latino immigrants working in poultry plants, restaurants, and agricultural fields in Sussex County face difficulties in daily life, including housing shortages and transportation challenges. La Esperanza and the Haitian Coalition of Delaware recently released the “Thriving Newcomers Report,” which highlighted housing, education, employment, childcare, and immigration as the top concerns for these communities.
With Sussex County experiencing significant demographic shifts, including a growing Hispanic and Latino population, accessing essential services and opportunities remains a struggle. The geographic divide between the eastern resort towns, which offer more job opportunities but higher living costs, and the western part of the county, where housing is more affordable, further complicates the situation for immigrants and lower-income residents. Executive Director Jennifer Fuqua of La Esperanza emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges to ensure that all residents have access to a quality of life that matches their income.
