Two children perish in frigid Detroit temperatures while sleeping in van, authorities confirm

Two children in Detroit, ages 2 and 9, were found unresponsive in a van where their family was living and later pronounced dead, suspected to have died from exposure to the cold. The mother had parked the van at a casino parking garage around 1 a.m. and it ran out of gas, coinciding with temperatures of 12 degrees with wind chills of 6 degrees in Detroit that morning. The mother discovered that one child was not breathing first, called a family member to take the child to the hospital, then realized a second child was also not breathing and called the family member back. Three other children survived the incident.

Detroit police are conducting an open investigation into the tragic deaths, which Detroit police Capt. Nathan Duda described as a sad situation he can’t imagine, especially as a father. Duda emphasized the importance of utilizing resources like shelters, churches, or other facilities set up to help those in need during cold weather. He also encouraged people to call 911 if they see others in need so that the right resources can be provided. Duda reassured the public that help is available for those in need, stating, “We do care.”
