Tencent Holdings is set to integrate DeepSeek’s AI search service into Weixin, China’s most popular super app. This move is part of Tencent’s strategy to leverage artificial intelligence across its suite of services, including social networking, e-payments, and ride-hailing. In a current beta test, users can access DeepSeek by clicking on an “AI Search” option within Weixin, in addition to Tencent’s Hunyuan foundational model. This feature is not yet available on WeChat, the overseas version of the app.
Users will have access to the full version of DeepSeek-R1 model for free, providing a more diverse search experience. DeepSeek-R1 is an open-source reasoning model released by a Hangzhou-based start-up, showcasing capabilities similar to more advanced models from major tech companies at a lower training cost. The integration of DeepSeek into Weixin would offer AI capabilities to the app’s 1.3 billion active monthly users, who use it for various activities such as chatting, sharing documents, watching videos, sending money, and shopping.
This move highlights Tencent’s commitment to enhancing user experience through AI technology, as it continues to expand its services and capabilities. DeepSeek’s integration into Weixin could potentially revolutionize the way users interact with the app, providing them with a more advanced and diverse search experience. With AI becoming increasingly important in the tech industry, Tencent’s partnership with DeepSeek demonstrates its dedication to staying at the forefront of innovation in the Chinese market.
