Oncologist clarifies: Cancer cases on the rise not linked to Covid-19 vaccine, says report from Health experts

The surge in cancer cases globally, including in Malaysia, is not linked to the Covid-19 vaccine, according to Senior Consultant in Oncology & Radiotherapy at KPJ Damansara Specialist Centre/KPJ Healthcare University Professor Dr. Aminudin Rahman Mohd Mydin. Factors such as unhealthy lifestyles, delayed health screenings during the pandemic, lack of exercise, poor diet, obesity, smoking, and air pollution are contributing to the rise in cancer diagnoses.

Dr. Aminudin emphasized the importance of early detection through screenings to improve treatment outcomes, as many patients in Malaysia seek treatment only in advanced stages of the disease. Public Health Expert Datuk Dr. Zainal Ariffin Omar also corroborated that there is no scientific evidence linking the Covid-19 vaccine to cancer, dismissing claims suggesting otherwise as unfounded.

Both experts called for a greater focus on health screenings and adoption of healthier lifestyles to prevent cancer. The pandemic led to a decrease in health checkups, contributing to the rise in cancer cases as more individuals resume screenings. Dr. Aminudin referenced a study in The Lancet linking air pollution to the increase in lung cancer cases, emphasizing the need for evidence-based information and avoidance of unverified claims. The key message from the experts is to prioritize health screenings and healthy living habits to combat the rising trend of cancer cases.
